The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has officially launched the Cyber Fundamentals (CyFun) framework in Ireland, a landmark moment for Irish businesses navigating the evolving cybersecurity landscape. This initiative marks a significant step forward in helping organisations demonstrate their commitment to cybersecurity, particularly in light of the EU’s #NIS2 Directive.
What is CyFun?
CyFun is a structured, tiered cybersecurity framework grounded in the internationally recognised NIST Cybersecurity Framework, soon transitioning to version 2.0. Originally developed in Belgium, CyFun has now been adopted by Ireland as a voluntary but highly recommended tool to help organisations meet their NIS2 obligations. It offers a practical, risk-based approach to implementing cybersecurity controls, tailored to the size, sector, and risk profile of each organisation.

Why This Matters for Irish Businesses
For the thousands of Irish entities expected to fall under the scope of NIS2, CyFun provides a clear and actionable roadmap. It bridges the gap between regulatory requirements and operational implementation, offering a credible path to future certification. Over the next 18–24 months, a national certification track will be developed, further reinforcing the framework’s role in Ireland’s cybersecurity ecosystem.

Proactive vs Reactive: The Business Case for Cyber Readiness
Research consistently shows that proactive cybersecurity strategies significantly reduce the impact and cost of cyber incidents. Organisations that invest in preventative measures:
- Experience fewer breaches and faster recovery times
- Foster a culture of security awareness across all levels
- Empower staff to make safer decisions both at work and at home
- Build trust with customers and partners, enhancing their market reputation
A proactive approach doesn’t just protect data, it protects your brand, your people, and your future.
